Holy Week and 2024 Easter

Palm Sunday, this coming 24 March, is the door to Holy Week. This door will lead us to an experience of our Lord’s Easter. Below is the calendar of the religious celebrations held in our Basilica. All the 6.00pm Holy Masses, the 11.00am ones on week days, the Holy Saturday Easter Vigil Mass at 9.00pm and the 10.00am Easter Sunday Mass will be streamed live via web and social media on our various online platforms (see footnote below).

“Feast of the Tongue of the Saint” Sunday 18 February in the Basilica of St Anthony

The Feast of the Translation of the Saint’s Relics, commonly called the Feast of the Tongue, will be held on Sunday 18 February. This is the second, most important feast celebrating St Anthony after the June 13 feast, and marks the discovery of his uncorrupt tongue over 760 years ago, more than 30 years after his death. This scientifically inexplicable phenomenon is what faith calls a miracle, seeing that the relic of the tongue, the instruments used by St Anthony for preaching, is still visible and uncorrupt after many centuries.

January 27: International Day to Commemorate the Victims of the Holocaust

On 27 January, the International day to Commemorate the Victims of the Holocaust, instituted in 2005 by the General Assembly of the United Nations to mark their liberation from Auschwitz concentration camp, the friars of the Basilica of St. Anthony of Padua remember their fellow friar, the Venerable Placido Cortese (1907-1944), who was the director of the Messenger of Saint Anthony magazine.

Sunday of the Word of God, on 21 January a celebration for the Bible

The Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padua will join in celebrating Sunday of the Word of God on 21 January. This initiative was spearheaded by Pope Francis in his effort to place the Holy Scriptures at the centre of life along with the Eucharist.

The celebration in the Basilica on Sunday 21 January at 11.00am will include a special ritual: the enthronement and the incensing of the Gospel. Moreover, during the whole celebration in the presbytery, the Gospel will remain exposed.
